The distinctions and the honours that distinguish citizens, one from another, in a commonwealth, Hobbes writes, must be authorized by the sovereign, and by him alone. If granted at all, these distinctions are to be understood, moreover, as extensions of the sovereign rather than marks by which one citizen may elevate himself above another:

To the sovereign therefore it belongeth also to give titles of honour, and to appoint what order of place and dignity each man shall hold, and what signs of respect, in public and private meetings, they shall give to one another.77
